In Memory of John Colgan

Louis `John` Colgan, 81, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at a
local hospital. He was born in Jackman March 30, 1923, the son of the late Larry
and Mariah Colgan. He was active in baseball during his younger years. The
culmination was his induction into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. He
joined the Army in 1940, serving in the South Pacific, and was a Pearl Harbor
survivor.
His activities included assisting in the
formulation of the Northern Timber Cruisers Snowmobile Club. John was also
manager of Hillcrest Golf Course for a number of years. He retired in 1979 as
the safety supervisor, Woodlands Division, from Georgia Pacific.
John was an avid snowmobiler and was the Trail
Master for the Northern Timber Cruisers Snowmobile Club for many years. He
firmly believed in grooming the snowmbile trails that it must be done at night
when the temperature are cold to assure maximum firmness of the
snow. This practice is still be performed today. ITS 86 East from the Northern
Timber Cruisers Clubhouse was dedicated to John Colgan recognition of his
efforts to enhance snowmobiling in the Katahdin Region. "Colgan" as he was
sometimes referred to, had a knack for driving on a wheel bearing with a 3 or a
5 pound sledge hammer. Not always successful with this practice, "Colgan" always
managed to get things done.

John is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jackie Colgan of

Gardiner, Ellen and her husband Mike Minotty of Sebastian, FL; three step sons,
