Some of the
most stunning winter scenery in the state lies here in
the Katahdin Area. Located just off Interstate 95
we have hundreds of miles of groomed trails, sled
rentals, and comfortable accommodations and trailside
restaurants. With breath taking views of Mount Katahdin
this area is sure to become your favorite snowmobile
vacation destination.
The Area
The scenic snowmobiling region surrounding Mount Katahdin offers
extensive service for snowmobilers in the Towns of
Millinocket-East Millinocket, and Medway and the many
smaller recreational communities along the trail
system.
Snowmobile Trails
Ten area snowmobile clubs coordinate their efforts to groom
approximately 350 miles of networked trails, including
the new Katahdin Loop Trail. The ungroomed perimeter
road of Baxter State Park is also open to
snowmobiling, offering a slower paced sledding
adventure in Maine's largest park. Stop into park
headquarters in Millinocket for information on access
and regulations.
Cross Country Ski Trails

The Northern Timber
Cruisers Snowmobile and Cross Country Ski Club grooms
and maintains over 20 miles of
wilderness cross country ski trails. It is one of
the few areas that provides track set trails and
scenic views based on a no use fee. The two most
popular areas include the trails at the
Northern Timber Cruisers Clubhouse on the way to
Baxter State Park and the
Bait Hole Trails south of
Millinocket on Route 11
SNOW SHOE
Trails
If
you can walk, you can go snowshoeing. There isn't a
long learning curve and it doesn't require a large
investment. It also doesn't require a lot of special
techniques.
The Bait Hole Area
(BH SS Map) offers over 5 miles of designated snow
shoe trails with several different loops to choose
from. You can start today, and have fun, immediately!
ICE FISHING
The
Katahdin Region offers numerous opportunities to ice
fish for trout, togue, salmon, splake, smelts,
pickerel and perch. No need to stay inside during the
long winter months waiting for the sun to come out
dreaming about open water and summer fun. Ice fishing
action can be fast and furious when winter seals the
lakes under ice. Best of all, there are no mosquitoes
or flies to "bug" you.
Of Local Interest
Antique Snowmobile Museum
Visit the Northern Timber Cruisers Snowmobile Museum,
located at the clubhouse on the Millinocket Lake Road
in Millinocket. The comfortable Timber Cruisers and East Branch Snow Rovers Clubhouses also
have open snack bars
during the riding season.
Ambajejus Boom House
The
Ambajejus Boom House is located on nearby Ambajejus
Lake and accessible by boat or snowmobile. The Boom
House area served as the final collection point of the
lumber that was harvested from the forests many, many
miles north of it, sawed into 4-foot logs and floated
down the mighty West Branch of the Penobscot, and then
corralled and hauled by large tow boats & smaller "boom
jumpers" to the paper mills. This building is host to
scores of logging artifacts and provides many insights
into the old river drives that brought the wood to its
final destination during the years prior to 1971. The
Boom House has been lovingly restored and maintained by
Chuck Harris, one of the many individuals who
participated in the last of the great log drives.
His
recollections of this bygone era and the history behind
the drives are worth a visit and the collection of
photos by Rick Brooker recording these treasures are
worth the time to explore! The Ambajejus Boom House is
open June - October.
